Return-to-work assessments: why independence matters for case management

If you’re managing a workers’ compensation injury case, you already know the hardest part is the decision point; when is a worker actually ready to return to full duties? A report from a treating clinician is useful, but it isn’t always designed for complex RTW case management.

The gap between recovered and cleared for full duties

Recovery and role-readiness are two different things. Someone can be discharged from active treatment and still not be physically ready for the specific demands of their job – whether that’s heavy lifting, overhead reaching, or sustained physical load. Conflating recovery with readiness is one of the most common reasons a return-to-work plan stalls or a claim drags on.

An independent return to work assessment closes that gap. It answers one specific question: against the actual physical demands of this role, is this person ready to perform?

Why independence matters

A treating clinician’s job is to advocate for their patient’s recovery. That is exactly how it should be, but it means their report isn’t built to serve as a neutral, third-party judgement on work capacity. For insurers, employers, and RTW coordinators, an assessment from an independent clinician carries significantly more weight because it is objective by design.

That distinction matters when a case is disputed or when an outcome needs to stand up to formal review.

What the assessment covers

Our return-to-work assessments are physio-led and functional, not just a desk review of medical paperwork. When conducting a comprehensive functional capacity assessment Perth case managers rely on, we evaluate lifting mechanics, joint range of motion, grip strength, and relevant fitness measures against the physical requirements of the job.

You receive a clear, risk-rated report that states plainly whether someone is ready for full duties, modified duties, or requires further rehabilitation. All assessments are conducted by AHPRA-registered clinicians at our Applecross, Mandurah, and Thornlie clinics.

Why this matters for disputed claims

A vague or subjective assessment is the fastest way for a claim to stall. A clear, independent functional report gives the employer, insurer, and worker the exact same objective information to work from. It removes guesswork and provides a clear path forward.

Continuity without conflict of interest

If a worker requires further rehabilitation following their return-to-work assessment, treatment can be actioned through our clinics under a separate care plan. However, the assessment itself remains entirely objective and independent of that treatment relationship.

When to use this service

Independent return-to-work assessments are most valuable for long-term claims, disputed cases, or any scenario where the outcome needs to be defensible and clear. If you’re managing a case where the next step depends on an objective answer, get in touch with Enhance Physiotherapy today.
